Overview of Infra-Red Photography

Infra-RedPhoto by Orange Bread

Today I just received my brand new Hoya RM72 Infra-red filter for my camera. I am quite excited to go out a shoot a few frames tomorrow. For those of you that do not know what Infra-Red can do here’s a quick overview.

  • Infra-red is the wavelength of light beyond the red end of the spectrum.
  • Infra-Red cannot be perceived by human eyes.
  • Green trees and plants to look very bright (almost over exposed) since they reflect large amount of Infra-Red light.
  • Blue skies and water reflect minimal amounts of Infra-Red and look black.
  • Clouds tend to stand out very well.
  • It has the effect of cutting through fog and haze because they reflect very little Infra-Red (extremely useful for use spies).

Infra-Red comes in many two main forms:

  • “Near Infra-Red” (this is what we photograph) it is very close the red end of the spectrum around 720 nm.
  • “Far Infra-Red”, this is what people see in James Bond movies and captures body heat as well though this is not photographable with ordinary equipment.

Once I start to take some pictures with my newly acquired filter I will post them to my gallery and add tips as I learn them.
